Breath Is Not Optional, For Me

Why Breath Is My First Line of Defense

At The Nature Within, we speak often about returning to the body—about listening, sensing, and remembering what already exists within us. Breath is the most direct pathway back to that remembering.

And yet, it wasn’t until I temporarily lost access to my breath practice that I truly understood how essential it is.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had to consciously maneuver through pain. Breathwork has been a daily practice for me for years—so familiar that its impact can almost fade into the background of life. Until suddenly, it couldn’t.

Breath has always been my first line of defense when pain arises—whether through an autoimmune condition or a spinal disc issue. While many of us understand breath conceptually, there is a profound difference between knowing about breath and living through it.

When the Nervous System Loses Its Anchor

Breath is a regulator of the nervous system. It resets patterns we don’t even realize we’re stuck inside of. When distress, rumination, or chronic pain loops arise, breath is where my body knows to begin.

Recently, that access was disrupted by costochondritis—an inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the breastbone. The condition restricted my ability to expand my rib cage and fill my lungs fully. No matter the breathing technique I tried, my breath remained confined to the upper chest—the least effective area for oxygen exchange and nervous system regulation.

The impact was immediate and far-reaching.

Sleep became disrupted. Movement felt guarded. The subtle internal resets I rely on—those quiet moments of regulation and relief—were no longer available.

Without realizing it at first, I found myself returning to a version of life I once knew before breath became a daily practice.

Life wasn’t bad then—but it wasn’t as embodied.

Without breath, clarity dimmed. Wisdom felt distant. My sense of internal connection weakened, and with it, the way I related to the world and to others.

This is how important breath is.

Breath as Medicine, Not Metaphor

For me, breath isn’t a concept—it’s a tool. A regulator. A medicine.

It has always been my way through pain, emotional overwhelm, and nervous system overload. Breath allows me to lower my guard and access deeper internal programs that quietly shape how I move through the world.

In these weeks of limitation, something else became clear:

Creativity diminished. Awareness stayed on the surface. The deeper layers of insight—those that emerge through sustained, rhythmic breathing—became inaccessible.

Yes, I could still think my way through challenges. But I couldn’t feel my way through them.

And that difference matters.

Breath supports calming the mind, softening the body, releasing tension, lowering inflammation, opening the heart, and restoring clarity, patience, and compassion. Practiced daily, breath becomes a full mind-body-soul experience—one that supports resilience and self-trust.

A Clear Contrast

Over these weeks, I’ve experienced emergency room visits, medical appointments, tests, medications, and treatment plans. I’ve tried most of them—both now and in the past.

And what became undeniably clear is this:

Nothing regulates my system as effectively as breath.

This isn’t a dismissal of modern medicine. In true emergencies, it saves lives—and I’m deeply grateful for it.

But breath is something different.

Breath is preventative. Breath is immediate. Breath is intelligent.

When I’m able to return to deep, rhythmic breathing—recognizing that there are many styles of breath, each with their own purpose and timing—it becomes my care team.

There is no waiting. No hierarchy. No delay.

Breath meets me where I am.

The Royal Flush of Well-Being

I’ve always known breath mattered. It’s why we teach it. Why we practice it. Why it’s woven into the work at The Nature Within.

But I didn’t fully understand how limited the human experience can become without it until now.

For those who know breath deeply, you already understand its power—whether navigating chronic conditions or simply needing to reset the nervous system in a demanding world.

If I had to describe breath in one image, it would be this:

Breath is like sitting at a table with an unbeatable hand—placing all your chips in the center.

Breath is the royal flush of my wellness practice.

And from here on out, I’m all in.
