Pain, Breath, and the Power of Beginning Again

Pain has a way of creeping into the quiet spaces. For those of us who live with chronic conditions, it doesn’t always announce itself loudly in the moment—it waits. It waits until the day slows down, until the responsibilities fade, until the world finally softens… and then it arrives all at once.
I know this truth intimately. I live with an autoimmune disease, a neck fusion, a hip replacement, and recurring spinal cord signal inflammation that complicates my daily movement. My body holds stories of surgeries, flare-ups, sensitivity, and limitations. And because of metabolization issues, pain medication is not part of my path—so every step, every movement, and every breath requires intention.
There are days when mobility and flexibility feel inaccessible. The hikes I love, the yoga flow that once felt natural, and even the ease of simple play become replaced with extremely slow, deliberate movement. Practices like Qi Gong and Tai Chi have become companions—gentle bridges between my breath and my body, helping me maintain fluidity where stiffness or resistance would otherwise take hold. They remind me that even slow movement is still movement, and even the smallest opening is still an opening.
But even with these practices, there is often a moment—usually at the end of the day—when everything I’ve pushed through, ignored, or simply didn’t have the capacity to acknowledge catches up to me. The pain becomes overwhelming. It becomes loud. It becomes all-consuming.
It is in these moments that I return to the simplest, most powerful anchor I have: my breath.
Just for Today
There are five words that have shaped my relationship with pain more than anything else:
Just for today
Thank you
“Just for today” keeps me from slipping into the role of victim—the cycle where pain feels like it defines me or dictates my experience of life. It stops the spiral that can become daunting and overwhelming. Instead, these words bring me back into the present moment, where healing can actually happen.
Just for today, I allow myself to feel.
Just for today, I allow the pain to move.
Just for today, I bless what hurts and release what I can.
Just for today, I remember that tomorrow will come with new light, new perspective, and a sunrise that asks nothing more of me than to begin again.
Our mentality is always a choice. No matter the circumstance, no matter the condition, no matter the challenge—how we meet the day is ours. That choice begins in the mind, but it is supported, strengthened, and grounded by the breath.
And so each morning, before anything else, I begin with a smile and two simple words:
Thank you.
Thank you for another day.
Thank you for the chance to try again.
Thank you for the ability to choose my mindset.
Thank you for breath that guides me back home.
Breath as the Catalyst:
Breath is not just air moving in and out of the lungs—it is information, communication, wisdom, and connection. It is the bridge between mind, body, and soul. When pain becomes loud, breath becomes my translator. It tells me what hurts, what needs attention, and what needs compassion. It reminds me that I am still here, still capable, still connected.
When you feed pain, resistance, or darkness with love rather than fear, frustration, or anger, the body responds differently. The vessel shifts. The contract with the pain changes. Breath can transform the overwhelming into the manageable, the tight into the open, the chaotic into the grounded.
Breath is the reason I return to gratitude—even on the hard days. It is the reason I wake each morning renewed and ready to begin again. It is the reason I continue choosing presence over defeat.
