Today happens to be my birthday.

For the past three years, I’ve learned more than I could possibly imagine about myself, other people, and the beautiful process of personal growth.

Not to mention, much of that growth came from a group that began as a professional one.

When we first met, I felt I had no place sharing space with the others in the room. Owners of small businesses, each navigating their own challenges, dreams, and aspirations.

Little did I know that these small business owners would eventually become something much greater.

Soul family.

There are no accidents.

For anyone trying to make it in the world today, it takes everything you’ve got.

Taking a break from all your worries sure would mean a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away?

Where everybody knows your name… Dum dum dum.

And they’re always glad you came… Bum bum bum.

Yup, you guessed it. I’m a huge Cheers guy! The mid-80s to early-90s sitcom, for those who don’t know.

The energy isn’t quite like that bar, but the feeling certainly is.

I feel like Sam Malone sometimes, and most of the time I feel like Cliff Clavin!

Cliff was known to have an answer for everything. “Studies after studies show that…”

And yes, I occasionally wear white knee socks with black shoes.

How do you like that?!

The key to life might actually be the character Woody Boyd. A bartender, who was a very simple man.

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that when you build bonds where everybody knows your name, and they’re genuinely glad you came, something beautiful happens.

The soul takes note.

The heart begins to fill with love, and tears of gratitude flow from the eyes.

That was my very vulnerable reality today.

We tend to support one another through the tough times. We hold space when life becomes heavy, when uncertainty creeps in, and when the path forward isn’t quite clear.

We celebrate one another. No obligation, and not because it’s someone’s birthday. Not because there’s an accomplishment worthy of recognition.

We celebrate the light in another person and genuinely want to watch it shine.

Find the people who celebrate you on the days when it isn’t your birthday.

The people who don’t compete with your growth, but contribute to it. The ones who can witness your success without comparing it to their own. The people who recognize your worth even on the days when you struggle to recognize it yourself.

All of us share our service for others, this is the “space” we are in. It’s part of the work. We show up for those seeking support. We tend to be the last ones to receive (or challenges accepting it).

Today, I was reminded that some of life’s greatest gifts aren’t wrapped in paper. They’re found in relationships, shared laughter, vulnerability, sincerity, and the quiet understanding that we belong.

What began as a room filled with small business owners has become a family of souls who have come together by no accident.

My heart is full.

It may be my birthday today, but the greatest gift is knowing that these are the people who would celebrate me on any other day, too.
